A hectic six weeks ...

06/10/2025

In a very exciting period I have been lucky enough to switch to the micro four thirds system in the form of an OM1 Mk 2 with 3 lenses, acquire  a 15" Mac book Air 2025 for image editing, splash out on a DJI Action 5 Pro camera with DJI mini mic's, and evaluate various photo editing software before settling on my original choice of the open source Darktable. Needless to say I also had to sell my Canon R6 Mk2 and full frame lenses to help pay for all this extravagance, getting a very good price from MPB.

Rather perversely all of this activity drastically reduced my photo output over the same period. The OM1 Mk2 being different from the R6 Mk2 caused me to miss many shots until I got used to it, and I am still struggling to pick up birds in flight. The smaller image area is throwing me off but practice will make perfect!

One of the more exciting functions of the OM1 Mk2 is the pro capture option, known as precapture in Canon circles. Although the R6 Mk 2 had this option I never used it as it required Canon proprietary software to extract them. My first attempt with a Kingfisher at first light was not perfect, but certainly demonstrated the potential.

In addition to trying to get used to all my new gear the weather also decided to play a part in minimising my photography. The extended dry and hot weather caused wildlife to understandably minimise their activity, and then we were hit by some extensive storms which caused localised flooding in the this part of the world. The latter did give me the opportunity to try out the computational ND filters on the OM1 Mk2 with some long exposure shots of the river Wharfe in flood.

With all the excitement of the OM camera I have barely begun to sound out the DJI Action 5 yet. However the addition of the DJI mini mic's do provide amazing sound quality, and the 4K quality of the image is simply amazing. The robust water proof design compliments the weather proof OM gear very nicely. There is a winter of fun ahead an my only problem now is how to fit it all into my camera bag!
